TODAY IN COMICS HISTORY: SUPERMAN and 18 JUNE

Don't be surprised if relatives in Kansas don't return your phone calls this weekend, or if half the folks you know are seen spotted running around town trailing a red cape.  In fact, we'd suggest you fit yourself with a cape of your own and join them. It's a holiday, after all

June 18th has long been observed as the day Kal-El's rocket ship, sent forth into the cosmos from the planet Krypton to save his life and in turn, for him to save ours, landed on Earth.  As for the year of the occurrence, there's much speculation. Some say it happened in June of 1938, when Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster chronicled Kal-El's arrival in the pages of Action Comics #1.  Others claim Krypton's Last Son crashed even before then; some say that it hasn't happened yet.

As with politics and religion - and one could argue that Superman is, indeed, a bit of both - polite conversation should make every attempt to steer clear of controversial matters of personal import.  If conversationally unavoidable, we'd advise that in lieu of joining the debate, you excuse yourself with an appropriate "Up, up, and awaaaayyyy!" and seek your converts, if you must, in a less public forum.

Thankfully, comicsblogging is definitely not polite conversation, and its liberating platform allows us to present our views on the matter of Kal-El's crash-landing with (near) impunity. As the traditional of corn on the cob dinner is even now being prepared, the DVR already readied for tonight's 13-hour Smallville marathon and the final readings (a difficult choice between For The Man Who Has Everything and Issue #2 of Birthright) selected, let us say briefly that Kal-El's landing didn't happen in 1938 - although it did - and it won't happen in the future -- although it will. The space ship that carried baby Superman to our planet has, is, and will happen -- it will always happen, or be happening, no matter what the time or year or era.

Such is the way of the very best of  stories, and the reason why 18 June is a truly important date not just in comics history, but in yours -- and ours.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
You already know the story. So, how would you tell it? If you're Grant Morrison, the answer would be  '8 words.'  Morrison and artist Frank Quitely's All-Star Superman is undoubtedly the greatest contribution  to Superman's mythos of the last decade; for dabblers needing a refresher on this June 18th, there could be none better.

IMAGINE ALL DAY with Abbracadabbling

Dabblers know the importance of balance, but what makes 'em so special is that they understand too much of a Good Thing is an even Better Thing.  That's especially true when we're talking about our Imagination and your graphic imagination.  For the next 24, abbracadabbling will be light on the letters as we take it to the visual extreme.  Insightful, sexy, funny, brilliant, bold, and even NSFW --  your graphic imagination is in the driver's seat as we imagine all day.

We're Looking For A Few New Super Interns

A MESSAGE FROM ABBRACADABBLING HUMAN RESOURCES

We hope everyone had a fun and safe April Fool's.  For whatever reason, the 01 April  holiday hasn't really taken off like, say, Christmas, but that doesn't mean it we can't do our best to make it a special day.

If you found yourself on the comicsblog yesterday, then you'll already know we did just that. The Joker joined us in the Springfield Home Office yesterday, co-hosting our blog and generally sharing an all-around good time. The only downer was that we lost three of our interns by days end, all of whom, as our lawyers told us to say, decided to "opt for an early retirement."

Needless to say, your favorite comicsblog now has several openings on the roster - three to be exact - and we're looking to fill each of them before 01 June 2010. If you or someone you know loves comics, is currently enrolled in a college or university, and has a really, really good medical plan, get in touch with us and we'll send an application right off.  Thanks, dabblers!

AN 8-BALL OF LAUGHS: Eight Great JOKER Pics for The April Fool

abbracadabblers are natural jokers - it seems to go with the territory.  But we're not like The Joker, Gotham City's 'Clown Prince of Crime' and the most popular, best-known bad guy in the world. Most of us aren't, anyway. Joker doesn't mind having tricks played on him (just ask Batman), because in his world, payback's a bitch and he knows he'll always have the last laugh. So it took a few dozen roses (plastic ones of the acid-spitting variety) and a box of chocolates (See's Candies, insertable razor blades by Gillette), as well as one very gullible Springfield Home Office intern to make the delivery, but 'Mister J' accepted our invitation to guest host April Fool's Day on the comicsblog.

Yeah, we figured that would make you smile! And since nothing gets Joker grinning wider than seeing himself in pictures (unless its seeing Batman in pieces), getting things off to a good start with comics art seemed liked a bright idea. In honor of Mister J, and in fond memory of our former intern we hope you get a laugh enjoying these eight really great takes of The Joker himself...

HEROES 4 HAITI: SPIDER-MAN Comics Auctions Begin Now On eBAY

Hey dabblers -- hope you all enjoyed a relaxing -- or not-so-relaxing --  long weekend, whatever your particular tastes may be!  Our weekend was one of preparation, as today was our goal for placing abbracadabbling's  first Heroes 4 Haiti auctions on eBay.  We're glad to say that the weekend work paid off; our first trio of comic book auctions went live this afternoon.  Here's what we've listed so far:

  • SPIDER-MAN: SAGA (1991) NM - Complete 4-issue NM Ltd Series [link]
  • SPIDER-MAN: REDEMPTION Complete 4-issue NM Ltd Series! Written by:  J.M. DeMatteis [link]
  • SPIDER-MAN: REVENGE OF THE GREEN GOBLIN Complete 3-Issue #1-3 NM Ltd Series [link]

We'll be posting additional auctions of new comics in  our Present Magic Comics Shop on eBay over the next day or two, and we invite every dabbler out there to stop by and spend a few bucks. Abbracadabbling has earmarked proceeds from our first three auctions above for the American Red Cross and its disaster relief efforts in Haiti.  If you'd like to bring another organization that's currently working in Haiti to our attention, be sure to leave us your Back Issues.  Your suggestions and participation will help us, help them -- and the work's only begun.  For the latest developments on Heroes 4 Haitiplease join  their  Facebook page HERE.

HEROES 4 HAITI: An Effort For Community

We admit it. Yes, even we were surprised -- and more than a little proud --  by the facts and figures we shared with you in our first Comics Community blog. To us, the numbers reflected in current Hollywood trends, comics-oriented website hits, and the international convention circuit were more than just impressive indicators of the Community's size -- they were the hallmarks of the growing economic and social clout of the superhero set.  But there's another hallmark we haven't mentioned before, one that in many respects may better define the Community's social and political nature better than any other -- beneficence.

Abbracadabbling became aware only yesterday of the Comics Community's latest to call to arms, Heroes 4 Haiti.  With the same conviction and spirit of Drawing Strength, the effort that mobilized comics writers, artists, and readers to donate their time, talent, and money to assist  victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005,  the Heroes4Haiti grassroots movement is the comics industry's collective response to last week's disaster in Haiti.

Though Katrina was a very real American tragedy, the loss of life and destruction from Haiti's January 12th earthquake is on a magnitude far greater than New Orleans -- and so is the need.  Heroes4Haiti's organizer, comics writer and artist Mike Cavallaro, a creator whose subject matter has largely focused on the heroism of humanitarian aid (his Parade with Fireworks was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2008), has done an excellent job by making H4H's scope so comprehensive that anyone can participate and contribute to the cause.

If you're a comics creator,  fan, collector, blogger, or an interested non-comics dabbler, the Springfield Home Office urges you to join all of us by taking part in Heroes Haiti. We'll tell you more about abbracadabbling's efforts after all the info and linkage you'l need to become involved.

Please join Heroes 4 Haiti in helping our fellow human beings by creating art and auctioning it off for charity by listing it yourself using eBay’s Giving Works program, by bidding in these auctions, by donating to relief organizations, or by volunteering your time to helping rebuild Haiti in the wake of this catastrophe.
